Our Territory
Notre territoire
Mathieu Volpe
Belgium / 2019 / 0:21:00

"When I arrived in Rignano, the inhabitants of the Ghetto told me:" You must not keep images of our despair, it does not belong to you ". The misery of the Ghetto is the first thing I saw, the first thing I wanted to show. "
Mathieu Volpe returns to the territory of his childhood, equipped with a few meters of film, to meet those who were absent from his memories of summer: migrants from North and South Africa, gathered for picking in the plantations modern. With delicacy and humility, he reveals a parallel economy and gives a name and a history to these invisible, which he magnifies by a sensual and contrasted photography, avoiding all misery.

Someone puts a VHS in a videorecorder. As soon as the videotape is played, television images of all kind appear on the screen. The images are blurred: these are Beatrice’s childhood memories. Just like the videotapes are inevitably blurred, so are the memories of her childhood. That’s the begin of a journey in which the film-maker processes some of the most important moments of her life and the relationship with her sick mother. Thanks to this painful quest, the film-maker reconstructs her most intimate narrative to find what she had lost.

Sculpt
Mathieu Brelière
France, Italy / 2019 / 0:05:00

"Sculpt" is a short film about collapse made in a modern Atlantis : the underwater Roman ruins of Baia, in Napoli. The film is a living proof of the dangers that climate change and human hubris can bring if no action is taken, whilst contemplating fallen civilisations remnants all around town and the people living in them. Finally and above all, the film is the first step of a wider project, supported by the city's town hall, to help children from disadvantaged areas to learn how to make films with their smartphones, and tell their stories. Napoli isn't only mafia and pizza, it's cultural heritage, strength, and a people, which is what "Sculpt" ultimately is about.
